Quattro FX CPAP Full Face Mask

Rating Price Manufacturer

A good all round mask with many satisfied users. An ideal back up mask for nasal pillow users who get hay-fever and sinus infections. However the high price is a real problem.

Pros Cons
– lightweight – Headgear size for each mask size
– few contact points – Air leakage into the eye is a problem
– durable headgear clips – VERY EXPENSIVE
– 360 elbow rotation

Good Mask but only 3/5 stars?

$185 makes it one of the most expensive full face mask around.

Is it made of a special material? No.
Cleaned with Phoenix tears? No.
Forged by one-armed monks in the South of France on the third Friday after a full moon? No.

There can be no justification for such a ludicrous price.

You get what you pay for

As the saying goes, "You get what you pay for" and for $185 you get a damned good mask.

The Mirage Quattro FX comes from ResMed — one of the top CPAP mask makers.

It is a replacement for the successful ResMed Quattro mask. (XlinkX). It’s a significant improvement over the previous mask.

It’s most notable feature is the new headgear: it wraps around the crown of the head and doesn’t have a forehead support.

No forehead support

Without the forehead support the mask doesn’t crowd your eyes making this one of the few full face masks that can be used by claustrophobics and people who like to read books or watch TV in bed.

If you’re used to a nasal pillow mask and suffering from a cold or allergies then you need to use a full face mask for backup. By having this mask, and it not obscuring your eyes you feel more comfortable using it.

Another thing I like about this that it’s lightweight. When you wear it it doesn’t feel you have an adult octopus latched on your face.

Leaks into the eye

The mask is difficult to get a seal around the bridge of the nose. This causes leaks in to the eyes. I think this is because it doesn’t have a forehead support.

You can limit the amount of leaks by putting it on following the ResMed’s advice (see video below). You need to angle the mask on the bridge of your nose and ‘rotate it down’. I.e. don’t put it flush on the face but hinge it from the bridge of the nose.

When you use the hinge technique you reduce a large amount of the leakage problem.

If you continue to have mask leaks then use Remzzzs mask liners. They help a lot.

Mask Sizes

The masks come in 3 sizes: small, medium and large.

The headgear come in 3 sizes: small, medium and large.

Minimum facial contact

Because of the lack of forehead support there is less contact to the face as normal. This makes it less annoying to wear.

To put the mask on you hinge the mask and clip it in place with two side clips. These are plastic but very well made. If they do break they can be replaced for around $5 (XlinkX).

The elbow (the thing that connects the hose to the mask) is 360 degrees movable. This is a good thing. It allows the hose as you move, decreasing the amount of drag on the mask. If the mask doesn’t move, the seal is retained.

Side, Back or Front Sleepers?

The mask is good for back sleepers. Side sleepers who aren’t too active work well with the mask. Support for stomach sleepers is limited with some users reporting difficulty to maintain a good seal.

As with all CPAP Masks make sure you buy return insurance. Getting a good fitting mask involves a lot of trial and error. And returning them to get another to see if it will fit properly.

Common Review Comments

  • the mask moves up your face as you sleep and you have to pull it down.
  • The quattro FX is sized smaller than the old Quattro: used to have a medium but needed a large for the FX.
  • I have a beard and couldn’t get a good seal
  • I have a sharp bridged nose and couldn’t get a good seal.
  • The headgear wrapped around the ears for me and so couldn’t wear my glasses.
  • Very easy to use and adjust, does not leave red marks on my face.

Cleaning Issues

Some users think they have to get a replacement soon after using the mask. But the problem is that they haven’t pushed the cushions into the grooves in the frame.

This is a common problem after you dismantle the mask for the daily CPAP clean.

I strongly recommend using the SoClean machine. (XlinkX). It’ll clean your mask, hose and humidifier without the need to take it apart and hand wash.

Great mask, not so great price. Worth a try as it is liked by a lot of users.
